Pills can be tough to swallow, not just for humans but also for our canine pals. While humans can be convinced into taking a bitter pill, there is a need to take a different approach with dogs. Dogs with their keen sense of smell can reject a medicine even before you bring it close to its mouth. Once it decides not to have a particular medicine feeding it can be messy if you don’t know what you are doing.
The problem is so real that many dog medications available online and in stores come in a tasty liver or beef flavor. However, it really depends on the pill and the quality of the flavorant. You can buy dog medications that says “palatable” on the package only to find out that your dog rejects it without giving it so much as a sniff.
Therefore, for all the newbie pet parents out there, here’re 4 sneaky ways you feed your dog medication.
find a liquid alternative and administer using a syringe
A lot of pet medications that are available as tablets are also available in liquid form. Liquid medication is much easier to administer. All you need to do is use a syringe (without the needle) to draw in the required amount of medication. Once you have the required amount of medication, simply part your dog’s mouth and squirt in the liquid. Make sure to go slightly deep so your pet cannot spit the liquid out. Don’t go too deep though as you can trigger a gaging response.
buy pill pockets
Pill pockets are tiny treats that can hide a standard-sized pill inside. The treat is so delicious that dogs gobble them up without a second thought. The pill inside the treat gets administered without you breaking a sweat. Using the same basic principle, you can also try and hide the medicine inside tasty meatballs and other doggie treats. Just make sure the food is not too liquidy as it can cause the pill to dissolve.
implement the treat-throwing technique
This is a method that works for dogs. Throw a few treats in the air to get your dog excited. Once it’s all worked up throw the pill and watch in awe as your dog gobbles that up too. This may or may not work with your dog but it’s definitely worth giving a shot. You can also try swaying your hand rapidly side to side with a dog treat in your hand. Once the movement catches the dog’s eyes give it the treat. Repeat this exercise a few times to build a sense of trust. Once the trust is built, it’s time for betrayal. Do the same movement with the pill in your hand. Once your dog is bursting with curiosity quickly present the pill. You should be able feed the pill without a problem.
use a pill gun
If everything fails, it’s time to bring out the big guns and by big guns, we mean a pill gun. These are small syringe like tools that makes pill administration really simple. These tools are available at most online pet pharmacies and pet stores.
